To mark the soft opening of FiLBooks’ new home in Reşitpaşa, join us for a special late-night lecture titled Midnight Spicy Picture Show by Dutch artist, designer, and curator Erik Kessels, who will present some of his most daring, humorous, and x-rated works and sign his books. Known for his fascination with the weird, the uncanny, and the wonderfully disturbing, Kessels invites the audience into a world where photographic misfits and visual oddities take center stage. For over two decades, he has collected anonymous and forgotten photographs from flea markets, second-hand shops, and trade fairs—recontextualizing and publishing them through his award-winning platform, KesselsKramer Publishing. Critically acclaimed series such as In Almost Every Picture and the magazine Useful Photography have redefined how we see amateur and vernacular imagery.

About Erik Kessels

Erik Kessels is a Dutch artist, curator and communication designer, with great interest in art and photography. Erik Kessels is since 1996 Creative Partner of communications agency KesselsKramer. As an artist and curator Kessels has published over 100 books of his 're-appropriated' images and has written the international bestseller Failed It! and Complete Amateur. He has taught at several Art Academies (Amsterdam, Milan, Toronto, Lausanne, Düsseldorf). Kessels made and curated exhibitions such as Loving Your Pictures, Mother Nature, 24HRS in Photos, Album Beauty and Unfinished Father. Currently he’s working on a long-term European art project called Europe Archive. In 2010 Kessels was awarded with the Amsterdam Prize of the Arts, in 2016 nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Until 2022 his mid-career retrospective is shown in Turin, Düsseldorf and Budapest and he exhibited recently in the SFMOMA. He was called “a visual sorcerer” by Time Magazine and a “Modern Anthropologist” by Voque (Italia).

Tuhaf, esrarengiz ve rahatsız edici olan şeylere olan ilgisiyle tanınan Kessels, izleyicileri uyumsuzlukların ve görsel tuhaflıkların ön plana çıktığı bir dünyaya davet ediyor. Yirmi yılı aşkın bir süredir bit pazarlarından, ikinci el dükkanlarından ve fuarlardan topladığı anonim ve unutulmuş fotoğrafları ödüllü platformu KesselsKramer Publishing aracılığıyla yeniden bağlamsallaştırıyor ve yayımlıyor. In Almost Every Picture serisi ve Useful Photography dergisi gibi büyük beğeni toplayan işleri, tabiri caizse amatör ve yerel fotoğrafları görme şeklimizi yeniden tanımlıyor.

Erik Kessels Hakkında

Erik Kessels, fotoğraf ile sıkça çalışan Hollandalı sanatçı, küratör ve iletişim tasarımcısı. 1996'dan beri iletişim ajansı KesselsKramer'ın kreatif ortağı olan Kessels, sanatçı ve küratör olarak yeniden yorumladığı görsellerinden oluşan 100'den fazla kitap yayımladı ve uluslararası çok satanlar listesine giren Failed It! ve Complete Amateur adlı kitapları yazdı. Amsterdam, Milano, Toronto, Lozan ve Düsseldorf gibi birçok Sanat Akademisinde ders verdi. Loving Your Pictures, Mother Nature, 24HRS in Photos, Album Beauty ve Unfinished Father gibi sergilerin küratörlüğünü üstlendİ. Halen, Europe Archive adlı uzun soluklu bir Avrupa sanat projesi üzerinde çalışmakta.2010 yılında Amsterdam Sanat Ödülü'ne layık görüldü, 2016'da ise Deutsche Börse Fotoğraf Ödülü'ne aday gösterildi. Orta kariyer retrospektifi 2022 yılına kadar Torino, Düsseldorf ve Budapeşte'de sergilendi ve yakın zamanda SFMOMA'da sergi açtı.
