Varoluş ve Psikiyatri by Engin Geçtan
Engin Geçtan wrote four books between 1975 and 1990 in his field of expertise, psychiatry, which were also received with interest by non-professional readers.Existence and Psychiatry is the last of these four, which have become classics today. This book also shows that the author, who started his writing studies purely out of academic interest, gradually placed humanity and the human condition at the center of his work.
Since it also includes the intellectual transformations Geçtan has undergone during his professional life, which now spans over forty years, it can also be considered, in a sense, an experiential-intellectual autobiography.
In the first part of the book, while the field of study and his personal approach to this field are introduced, the human being is described as a "process"; but this is a human being living within an ongoing culture. In the second part, consisting of articles titled "Meaninglessness," "Narcissism," and "Life and Death," a series of fundamental existential questions that the author shared with many people in his clinical work are addressed.
